Happy Mid-Autumn Festival

Da Zhong Guo (or better known as Dai Chong Kok in Cantonese) makes traditional mooncakes
"How I miss the days of old
When things were so much simpler
We prized what was within
More than a pretty exterior"

Regular lotus paste with single yolk from Dai Chong Kok
Da Zhong Guo (大中国) makes traditional mooncakes, which I'm glad to see still come in old school packaging. It hasn't joined the others in churning out elaborately overwrought (and expensive!) boxes. Ironically, this way it stands out from the rest.

And the mooncakes? Well, they're traditional as well - no new-fangled flavours. Doesn't stop the lines from forming though. At the Takashimaya mooncake bazaar, they are the ONLY stall that did not offer samples. They simply didn't need to. They move boxes simply by their established brand. Personally their product is a little too heavy for my liking, but I appreciate that they are at least more eco-friendly with minimal packaging.

Hope you enjoyed the mid-autumn festivities and calories.

  2. I have never tried them and I didn't need 4 whole mooncakes or I would have picked up a box. Like you said, it's very old school but because there was so sampling, I didn't get to try. :(

  3. Great write-up u have, enjoyed this as I sincerely think that Tai Chong Kok is not swayed with intense competitio but to stick to the old school of mooncake packagings.

  5. MissyG: Hey, your favourite? This is quite a heavy-duty mooncake! My first time trying it!

SIG: well, I bought one box (pretending it is) for my parents. Yeah, went for it on blind faith. But at least they were much cheaper than the others.

Jencooks: yes, that's why I thought it was worth blogging.

  7. I have never tried 大中国 till this year. Believe it or not, the only thing I heard abt them is the long queues.

However, this year due to charity, my bf has gotten 2 boxes of 大中国, namely the 金华五仁 and 冰皮蓮蓉. I am pretty surprised by the 冰皮.

Being a fan of 冰皮, I am very particular about the skin and there are only 3 stalls which I patronized faithfully, namely 东海潮州酒家, Shangri-la and Fairmont (Raffles the Plaza).

Surprisingly, 大中国's 冰皮 is really fine and soft and relatively thick. Yummy... So I got the best of both, a thicker skin with a fine texture
