Aston's Wagyu Beef Steak

Aston's Wagyu Beef Steak, originally uploaded by Camemberu.

Hubby and I walked down East Coast Road after the unsatisfying prawn noodles and hit up Aston's for what we hoped to be better grub.

We shared the wagyu steak. Rated as wagyu grade 5 or 6, but didn't have any wow factor, unlike at Aburiya (I'm sorry but that place has spoilt us!). The meat had lots of tendons and chewy bits within. You know it's not a good sign when you have to dip it in the gravy sauce to make it taste better.

I must say I was quite surprised when the sides arrived - 4-5 limp onion rings and a small baked potato soaking in oil. Atrocious and miserable for a joint like this. Apparently bad side dishes are quite a well-known "complaint" here...Hubby commented that Aston may have big dreams but he is still a hawker at heart.

Perhaps Aston's other specialties are a better bet. Honestly, we would not pay S$38.90 for this wagyu dish again, even if it's touted as a "bargain". I think we should have gone for the ieat Super Burger instead. Ah sigh.

P.S. I didn't like the way customers had to order their meals (at the cashier) before they could sit down. And it wasn't as if it was to pay first - you have to go to the cashier again after eating to pay. People might spend quite a while perusing the menu at the counter, causing a blockage at the entrance. So the queues you see forming outside Aston's may not be because of its popularity but a bad process instead. I'm really not sure why they can't allow orders to be taken at the table, they seem to have a lot of staff who should be able to handle it.

  1. I really hope Astons will quickly pull up their socks before they start losing customers!

  2. Yeah me too. I think there have been increasing complaints as you can see on the Makansutra forum. I really wanted to support Astons. Hope he manages to make good use of the feedback.
