Pixar - 20 Years of Animation

Lifesize Sully and Mike
"Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life"- yes, I have always been insanely envious of artists working in animation (especially Disney and Pixar). It's a lot of hard work, but the creative satisfaction is matchless. Pixar's movies have always had a leading edge, because they focus first on the story, not the effects.

Pixar: 20 Years in Animation shows you what goes on behind the scenes and how movies are made at Pixar. At first I thought it would be a great place for kids, but it's actually got a lot of content for the mature enthusiast.

OMY brought bloggers to see the exhibition yesterday.  I was impressed that A/Prof Lim Tit Meng personally came to welcome the bloggers. How often do you get to meet the Chief Executive of the Science Centre? Nice chap, really funny.

There are two specially created exhibits that you must not miss - the Zoetrope and Artscape.

The Zoetrope is an amazing exhibit
The Zoetrope or "Wheel of Life" demonstrates the basic principles of animation. Three-dimensional figurines or "maquettes" are mounted on precise points on a disk that spins at one revolution per second (rps). A strobe light flashes and freezes the motion as a single image, and when we see lots of these frozen images, they create the illusion of fluid motion. The photo above shows the still figures. You really should see the animated movement - amazing.

I'm proud to note that this is inspired by the "Bouncing Totoro" zoetrope at Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo, Japan.

The second exhibit is Artscape – an immersive audio-visual installation which uses digital technology to bring to life the handcrafted art in the exhibition. All the beautiful concept art is brought to life with 3D-like movement and seamless transitions. If someone made this into a screensaver, I'd buy it!

Resin figures from Finding Nemo, A Bug's Life and Ratatouille
Models made from urethane resin capture the final look of the characters.

Ant Island, version II...(A Bug's Life)
I love the detailed artwork. More than 500 sketches, paintings, sculptures and digital installations are featured.

Quotes from John Lasseter pepper the exhibit
There are quotes and looping videos throughout the exhibition. There are also some interactive kiosks showing interviews, and a small theatre showing stills. You might also see a full 3D movie - I think it's Toy Story for May and Toy Story 2 for June.

Colorscript for UP!
The colorscript for the movie "Up!"

A colorscript is an artwork that visually supports the emotional content of a story through general color, lighting and mood. An chronological portrayal of the story before they even start anything on computers.

You can view more photos of the exhibit on my Flickr photo set (28 photos). More art photos in this BBC gallery. Do note that photography of any kind is not allowed within the exhibition. The bloggers got special permission.
