Happy 2013 from Sunnyhills - Still The Best Taiwanese Pineapple Cakes!

Now that Christmas is over, we're all looking forward to a festive new year!

We had an early peek at Sunnyhills pineapple cakes new year packaging - this is what it is going to look like! All gloriously swathed in vivid vermillion and yellow. On the cover is a whimsical snake drawing forming the "2013" with the four founders stacked up as "1".

These are still the best Taiwanese pineapple cakes I have tried. They taste of real fruit, and don't have any artificial pineapple fragrances that are present in some others. I also love the buttery crust that holds firm the generous filling. These cakes are baked in Taiwan and airflown to Singapore. Go visit the cosy store at Raffles Hotel Shopping Arcade #03-05 and be entreated to their amazing hospitality (each visitor gets a cup of oolong tea and piece of pineapple cake).

These pineapple cakes make great gifts when you go visiting for Chinese New Year (CNY). The buttery pineapple cakes resemble gold bricks, so these are perfectly auspicious. Inside, the pineapple filling captures the goodness of the sun (I have seen the sunny slopes of Nantou where the pineapples are grown). The sweetness also aptly lends a 甜甜蜜蜜 connotation (fantastic wedding favour too - way better than any slice of fruitcake).

The CNY gift set will be available two weeks later from 10 January 2013, but I'm sure you can pre-order. Email your queries/orders to service@sunnyhills.com.sg or call/send an SMS to +65 8522-9605 (10am to 6pm).

Wooloomooloo Steakhouse Signature Items plus Christmas/New Year Menus!

Oh, Jamón Ibérico, how I love thee...

But wait, we're here for the steak. That's what Wooloomooloo Steakhouse is about. Yes, it's named after the bayside town of Woolloomooloo just south of Sydney, Australia (hey, that's near where I went sky-diving in June this year).

But why would this premium Hong Kong chain choose such an unusual name?

Christmas and New Year Festive Buffet at PARKROYAL on Beach Road

Merry Christmas Eve! What a wonderful time to be with family and friends, celebrating the festive season. And if you don't feel like cooking (and the massive cleanup afterwards) at home, you can always have a party elsewhere. That's what we did last week - lots of bloggers gathered at Plaza Brasserie at PARKROYAL on Beach Road for a blue-white-silver themed festive buffet.

This year, the hotel is serving Pork Knuckles served in Asian inspired Spicy Sauce and Red Wine Sauce together with the traditional Roasted Turkey, Honey Baked Ham and Meat Loaf. The usual buffet favourites are still there - deep-fried soft shell crab, sea cucumber with roast pork, butter prawns, a small but nice Indian section, sushi, sashimi, fresh oysters, and salads.

There are Yuletide desserts too - fruit cake, stollen, puddings and pies, plus log cakes. But the best dessert was the Kapiti Lemongrass and Ginger ice cream - a must-try!

The promo is on until 1 January 2013.

Check out the other bloggers' posts for more. Here are three - CookSnapEatLove, Melicacy, Moonberry (who very sportingly came with reindeer antler headgear!)

P.S. It was also Jolie's birthday last Monday, and they specially plated a slice of cake for her (thanks, Karen!). She's eating a lot of cake this month! Thanks to @kopikosonggirl also who very sweetly got Jolie that pink rose hairband!

Fortune Delights Rojak at Marine Parade Central

Another neighbourhood gem. Fortune Delights at the Marine Parade Central food centre. This stall's rojak I never tried in all my ten years living in the East. But I'm glad I did today (after seeing the lady ferry a lusciously dark mountain of rojak to a customer). Nice crunchy vegetables and sweet pineapples doused with prawn paste dressing and a sprinkling of crushed peanuts. The tongue-tingling flavours party well together; the savoury, sweet, spicy and tart are all pretty well-balanced.

You know the part I often like best about rojak? The giant "croutons" in this salad - the you tiao (dough fritters) that do such a good job of soaking up the flavours! But these days I'm leaning more towards the juicy vegetables (turnip and cucumber).

This stall also offers popiah and pork rib prawn noodles. Guess I should head back more often.

My SNAPWARE Makeover: Airtight, Durable and Safer Food Storage!

Yes, I finally have my dream food storage system! Thanks to the kind folks at World Kitchen (makers of Corelle® and other kitchenware) I got a fabulous makeover with the SNAPWARE® storage solution!

SNAPWARE is a durable range of plastic and glass airtight containers that are microwave, dishwasher, oven and freezer safe, and are completely free of Bisphenol-A (BPA). All made in compliance with US FDA standards.

You can keep food safer for longer, and transport food easily, because it's 100% airtight with maximum leak-proof protection.

And no, they are not made in China (phew). This is quality stuff made in the USA and Korea, with a lifetime warranty!

There are a few different ranges within SNAPWARE.

The stackable Snapware Airtight Modular range lets you arrange things in blocks
The SNAPWARE Airtight Modular range, as its name suggests, is modular and lets you arrange things in neat blocks. The lids are colour-coded for easy reference. And they are stackable when empty, saving valuable space!

The containers come in various sizes and configurations.

Finally I have my ideal flour bins! It's so easy to take cups of flour out from it
I'm so happy I've found my ideal flour bins! It's now so easy to flip open the big tab and scoop out the requisite cups of flour. And I can organise them easily by type too.

I love the Airtight Canisters
The SNAPWARE Airtight Canisters are wonderfully easy to use too. You can literally just use one hand to open and close them. So nice to see things organised in matching containers too. Choose from round or rectangular forms in tall, medium or short heights.

The black top one is specially for coffee - comes with a scoop too!

The containers are easy to open and shut but are completely airtight
The SNAPWARE containers are easy to open and shut but are completely airtight. Even kids know intuitively how to use them.

Kids can help themselves to food
Cookies stay crisp and tasty!

Snapware also has this really nifty cupcake carrier
SNAPWARE also has this really nifty cupcake carrier!

It stores twelve cupcakes or muffins, and is stackable too
It stores twelve cupcakes or muffins, and is stackable too! You can snap on another one on top and carry two dozen with you for a party or picnic.

You can prepare, store and serve all in the same container
The super versatile Airtight Eco One-Touch is probably my favourite range - it's made from natural, stain proof and shatter-resistant glass.

You can prepare, store and serve all in the same container - here I have some kyuri (Japanese cucumbers) being pickled.

The Airtight Eco One-Touch is great for marinating and storing items in the fridge or freezer, and can be used for baking too!
It is great for marinating and storing items in the fridge or freezer, and the glass dish can be used for baking too! A simple press of the button on the lid compresses then air within and prevents further air flow. Totally airtight and leak-proof (yes, you don't want any marinades spilling or adding smells to the fridge).

The glass range is not so easy for kids to open, because it seals tightly and only releases with the button on the lid
The glass range is not so easy for kids to open, because it seals tightly and only releases with the button on the lid. Good when you need to keep curious hands out!

The smallest size is perfect for my Hiyayako (cold tofu)
The smallest size for the rectangular series is perfect for my Hiyayako (cold tofu). Pour a little tsuyu (seasoned Japanese soy dipping sauce) and sprinkle some seaweed furikake over a block of tofu (you can blanch it first, if you prefer) and you get a tasty, a low-calorie, protein dish in bare minutes!

The glass container catches all the sauce and toppings nicely, so I don't have to use too much seasoning (which goes to waste eventually).

The SNAPWARE Airtight Vacuum Range secures safely without leakage
The SNAPWARE Airtight Vacuum Range also secures safely without leakage. An additional tab on top of the lid can be lifted when microwaving to facilitate heat flow, allowing the food to be reheated thoroughly. When unused, the containers can also be nested and stored in a safe-efficient manner.

Sigh...can't believe this used to be my old storage system
Sigh...can't believe this used to be my old storage system. Well, really no system at all.

My horrendous mess of storage containers previously
Yup, the previous mess of storage containers - lids that don't match, containers that don't last, glass bottles that are never the right size, disposable takeaway boxes that we try to recycle a few times before throwing away. On top of that, it's an eyesore!

Now it's all neat and tidy!
And now it's all so neat and tidy! One set for life - so much more environmentally friendly too, compared to repeatedly buying and tossing less durable containers.

Hahaha....Snapware princesses!
Nadine and Jolie goofing around with the labels, pretending to be SNAPWARE princesses.

Well, I'm very glad to junk all my old stuff and have durable storage solutions that makes sense.

SNAPWARE storage are great housewarming and Christmas gifts for the houseproud. Even if you don't get some for yourself, get some for others! It is available in all Tangs, Metro and OG outlets, as well as Mustafa at S$3.90 - S$29.90. Very good value, considering the lifetime warranty!

Help MINDS Make Christmas Sweeter For Some Very Special Kids?

Have you bought all your Christmas presents already? Some of us have already gotten Christmas presents, and some wonderful ones too! Many of us also remember the less fortunate and reach out to those too, in this season of caring and sharing.

The MINDS Christmas Stocking Challenge is back again - you can sponsor a S$10 stocking for a child with special needs or from an underprivileged home, and it will also benefit the disabled person who made the stocking. One present helps two persons!

Last year, thanks to generous support, MINDS reached 138% of their initial target of 5,000 beneficiaries, blessing a further 1,900 disadvantaged/disabled children with a treat-filled stocking gift for Christmas!

This year, they are severely short - less than 20% of their target - because of delays from implementing the online sponsorship portal (which many people requested). But yes, e-donations means now you don't have to mail checks or drop by in person! You can use convenient e-banking to make someone's Christmas a little sweeter. All contributions are tax deductible.

What goes into the stockings? Each child will receive stationery, sweet treats and chocolate (for some families, these are treats they cannot afford). The stocking can even be converted into a useful pencil case. The full list of beneficiary organisations is listed on the website. There is also an FAQ on how the whole thing works, and why the items were chosen, etc.

“REACH FOR THE STARS”
This year's theme - 'Reach for the Stars', is inspired by Liu Sze Sze, a client from MINDS Employment Development Centre who loves handiwork and arts. The star seen in the event's logo is drawn by her - she had to practise a hundred times before getting this, as her psychomotor skills are different due to cerebral palsy.

The Star represents Hope and Aspiration and shows Sze Sze's determination to strive for excellence in whatever she does despite the challenges she faces with her disabilities.

Go on over to their site to see what it's all about and sponsor a stocking (or more) if you can. I'm so glad they now allow online donations. A moment of joy is just a click away.

Do call contact 6473-1148(ext 237/230) or ChristmasStockingChallenge2012@minds.org.sg if you have any queries.

Please help to share this with your friends, family, classmates and colleagues too. You're welcome to reblog this too.

Thank you!

Ne Ne Chicken? I Beg Your Pardon?

A name like that here would give Hooters a run for their money. But cheeky as it sounds, Ne Ne Chicken isn't a joint specialising in a certain chicken part. "Ne" means Yes in Korean, and "Ne Ne" is a doubly enthusiastic expression of friendliness. This Korean chain is seriously popular (1,003 outlets in South Korea alone!) and we're their first international outlet!

Ne Ne Chicken is all about sauce-coated, deep-fried battered chicken. The menu can be quite mind-boggling at first, with about seven sauces and three types of chicken parts - nine-piece whole chicken, boneless tenders, wings and sticks. And then there are the more affordable Super Meal sets with about four pieces.

Jolie loves saying, "Ne Ne Chicken"

I stay in the East but something like this is worth an investigative trip out to Buona Vista (the outlet is at Star Vista which is just next to the MRT). My kids and I had an impromptu meet-up with Keropokman and wife for a quick dinner (pardon the hastily taken iPhone photos!). The 17-seater shop is small and focuses more on takeaways and delivery. But very cheerfully decked out in their signature yellow.

You'll have to wait a while for your food as they only cook it upon order. It comes really piping hot! The batter does stay fairly crispy even after being doused with sticky sauces. Apparently it also shields the meat from drying out, so the chicken remains juicy. Strangely I found it almost too moist inside.

Freaking Hot
Of course we had to try the Freaking Hot Chicken. Yeah, it looks deadly, and it will be for some folks. The heat doesn't hit you immediately, but it is a nice slow burn (you'll feel it in your tummy afterwards too). I had two pieces and mopped up the sauce afterwards with other chicken pieces. And then I had to reach for drinks! But it's bearable.

We also tried Swicy (Sweet and Spicy?) which had a similarly reddish, gooey, translucent sauce that was much milder. A little too cloyingly sweet for me. Between the two, it's Freaking Hot all the way!

Green Onion
Even though there's no chili in it, my favourite is the Green Onion Boneless Tenders (S$26.90 for approximately 35 pieces with pickled radish and fries) - the chicken isn't drowned in sticky sauce, and so these boneless tender pieces are much more crispy. The sauce is also more savoury than sweet, a combination of mustard, soy and just a touch of sugar. The shredded green onions add a nice hit of spice.

Ne Ne Pop
Their Ne Ne Pop (S$5.90) gives you a drink with Popcorn Chicken and Tater Tot-like hash brown pieces. The chicken and potato sit in a plastic container atop the half-filled cup. Definitely a hit with the kids, and great movie snack idea (if movie theatres allow it at all). Pity the portion is so very very small!

I also couldn't resist going to Ne Ne Chicken again when I had the chance to drop by Star Vista a second time this week.

Original
We tried the Original, which is any day better than KFC.

Black Sesame
Some folks like the Black Sesame, but I'm still partial to Green Onion and Freaking Hot. Oh some sets come with really nice pickled radish cubes. And buffalo sticks (ultra-slim coated shoestring fries)

Snowing Cheese
The Snowing Cheese is oddly sweetish with its powdery coating of cheese. I wish they would do a blue cheese version!

The chicken is still best enjoyed in the shop freshly made. If you do take away or get Ne Ne Chicken delivered, it's best to pop them in the oven a few minutes to crisp up the chicken pieces.

They very thoughtfully provide plastic disposable gloves for eating, and also moist towelettes for cleaning up. Friendly Ne Ne indeed. For fast food, prices are a tad on the high side, but hey, I'd pick Ne Ne over Nandos any day.

Totally Random IKEA Christmas Shopping Ideas - Senior Pot, Mala Easel and Tindra Scented Candles

IKEA SENIOR Casserole good for braising meats

Ahh, this is what makes a house a home! A sizzling pot of goodies to fill and warm bellies with love.

Home is for the holidays, so it says on the IKEA website for Christmas. It's no secret that my family loves IKEA. But I'm not going to show you table setting ideas or festive decorations, because I think you must have seen a surfeit of those by now. If you haven't, you're welcome to browse their site!

It's nice to decorate, but I'd rather cook.

And the one thing I have been missing from my kitchen is a nice cast-iron Dutch oven or casserole pot. I've hesitated splashing out for a Le Creuset or Staub. Then I heard some people were pretty happy with the IKEA alternative - the SENIOR casserole pots at prices that are hard to beat (S$69 for 3L round pot; S$89 for 5L oval pot).

IKEA SENIOR Casserole good for no-knead breads

I'm only in my first week of using one and have no complaints. It's great for braising meats (top first photo), and also for baking no-knead bread (above). The enameled cast-iron seems a bit better than my Pyrex bowl at getting a golden crust. The lid knob is also metal (unlike Le Creuset's), so it does not have to be changed to take on high temperature baking.

IKEA SENIOR Casserole with Lid
The interior is matt enamel that's easy to clean. You do have to season it one time before using, but not afterwards. The pot lids come with little nubs that cause steam to collect and drip down, effectively basting the food automatically.

The only drawback? We only have blue in term of colour choice. Maybe if we have enough demand for these, IKEA will consider bringing in more colours? Although I strongly believe more colours will spur people to buy something in their favourite shade.

And since the kids are home a lot for the year-end holidays, it's good to keep them interested in writing and drawing. They absolutely love the IKEA MÅLA Easel! I've been eyeing this set for a while, and the price has recently come down from S$39 to S$29.90! BUY!!!

Kids using the IKEA MÅLA Easel
It's got a blackboard on one side, with handy tray for chalk and erasers.

Kids using the IKEA MÅLA Easel
And a whiteboard on the other side. In the middle you can put in a long roll of paper (available separately) that can go either side. I won't show you what Jolie's Chinese handwriting looks like!

And Christmas is an extra nice time to fill the home with scented candles!

IKEA TINDRA Scented Candles

These TINDRA candles in glass (30 hour candles just S$4.90) are always a treat. Plus you can re-use the glasses for tealights or other candles once you're done with the original candle.

Meanwhile, they've started counting down for Advent! See anything you like?

My Family's Christmas Dream Meal -- Ruth's Chris Steak House

The steaks are broiled at 980 degrees C and served on plates warmed to 260 degrees C
Oh yes. A nice steak dinner. That would be a dream meal for the family this Christmas.

Some very fine custom-aged USDA Prime beef expertly broiled at 980 degrees C (1800 degrees F) and served on plates heated to 260 degrees C (500 degrees F). See the guys handling the plates carefully with napkins? They're hot! I mean the plates. Those are some mind-boggling temperatures!

For our Christmas feast this year, I'm hunting for a great dining spot that takes American Express because there's a chance to win round-the-world SQ tickets. Among the destinations are San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Houston. All of which also happen to be places where you can find Ruth's Chris Steak Houses. Not surprisingly, because this fine-dining chain has over 130 locations worldwide. Singapore is the 133rd location, but we're the first in South-east Asia.

Ruth's Chris began in New Orleans
You may already know the story behind this famous chain. It all began in New Orleans (doncha love the mardi gras beads and squeezable cow?). A single working mom named Ruth Fertel mortgaged her home to take over Chris Steak House, so she could have a business to provide for her children. She named it Ruth's Chris Steak House. That was some forty years ago, and now the business has grown so big, it's part of a publicly listed restaurant group (NASDAQ: RUTH). How cool to have your name as a stock on NASDAQ!

Have some pre-dinner drinks at the bar
Here's a toast to that inspiring success story. You can have pre-dinner drinks at the adjoining bar at Ruth's Chris. It's small here, as we don't really have that culture of drinking before we eat. But do try some of their cocktails. This apple one is quite refreshing.

But I know my family will zero in on the food, and there's plenty of good stuff here. Ruth's Chris is not just for steaks -- there are some stellar appetisers and desserts too.

Sizzlin' Blue Crab Cakes
Sizzlin' Blue Crab Cakes (S$35 for 2 huge pieces)
Best crab cakes ever? Possibly! Ruth's Chris features jumbo lump crab cakes with sizzling butter and lemon. Jumbo is the operative word, and there's so much crab meat packed in here, it's the most generous crab cake I've seen. The crispy crust holds loads of decadently creamy, well-seasoned crab meat inside.

Barbecued Shrimps
Barbecued Shrimps (S$35)
That bright-looking Creole butter sauce with white wine, garlic, herbs and spices? Amazing. Don't be shy about mopping it up with bread. The shrimps are just lightly smoky and sweet, but perhaps might seem a little overdone for Asian tastebuds (you know how the Chinese cooks are especially fastidious about seafood cooked just right).

Seafood Gumbo
Seafood Gumbo (Soup of the day, market rate prices)
The seafood gumbo is hearty and comforting. The stew is topped with a mound of white rice, which somehow makes it very familiar to us.

Ruth's Chop Salad
Ruth's Chop Salad (S$23)
This is their signature salad, created inhouse. Julienned iceberg lettuce, baby spinach and radicchio are tossed with red onions, mushrooms, green olives, bacon, eggs, hearts of palm, croutons, bleu cheese, lemon basil dressing and then topped with crispy onions.

The blue cheese is really strong in this, so if you're not fond of stinky cheeses, take note.

OK, wonderful as the appetisers are, it's time for the mains!

The Ribeye
Ribeye (12 ounce, 340 grams, S$85)
You can hear and smell the steaks even before they appear - sizzling butter on the very hot plates plus the aroma of seared beef. The ribeye is tender and juicy, nicely fatty and smooth. But somehow it's just a wee bit more bland than other ribeye steaks I've had. Sizewise, this is probably good enough for two small eaters to share. Bigger appetites can ask for the 16 ounce, 450 grams at S$120.

Petite Fillet
Petite Fillet (8 ounce or 230 grams, S$85)
As the name suggests, this is a smaller cut (you can tell from the size of the grill marks). It's much leaner and has that cottony soft texture typical of most tenderloin steaks. It's also quite mild flavourwise.

New York Strip
New York Strip (12 ounce or 340 grams, S$85)
I normally prefer ribeye to the New York Strip, but having tried both here...I find myself preferring the more beefy taste that the New York Strip has. Sure, it's a bit more chewy but in an enjoyable way. Rawr!

Like the ribeye, this is also available in a bigger slab - the 16 ounce or 450 grams at S$120.

The steaks are done just right, with just salt and pepper for seasoning, finished with chopped parsley and melted butter
The steaks are done just right, with just salt and pepper for seasoning, and finished with just a sprinkling of chopped parsley and dab of melted butter. You can ask for sauces, but with beef this good, you won't need them.

Steak Fries - with rosemary, roasted garlic and sun-dried tomatoes
Steak Fries (S$18)
For me, steak and fries go together. These seriously massive wedges are topped with rosemary, roasted garlic and sun-dried tomatoes - rather interesting. If these don't fill the belly, I don't know what will. Oh wait, there's another potato side dish...

Fresh Asparagus with Hollandaise
Fresh Asparagus with Hollandaise (S$23)
But you should have more greens to balance all that meat. Asparagus spears very simply poached and served with Hollandaise sauce is one choice that seems healthier than creamed or gratin-style vegetables.

Baked Potato
Baked Potato (S$20)
Yes, that other quintessential side for steaks, the baked potato. The spuds are massive, so you can easily share this. Sour cream, chives and bacon complete the ensemble.

Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red 2006
A good glass of red to go with the meat. This is a fairly young Bordeaux that's a little bit smoky and spicy with hints of berries - the Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red 2006 (S$400/bottle) from Napa Valley, California. I'm not much of a drinker, so I think I'll happily save the calories for more food instead.

Or dessert! The hidden gems at Ruth's Chris...

The Cheesecake is divine!
The Cheesecake (S$25) is divine! Is it worth the price tag? Yes, yes, and one more yes! OK, I'm partial to anything with cheese in it, but this is probably one of the best cheesecakes I've ever had. Gorgeous golden crust and luscious cream cheese topped with a sweetish sour cream. Every bite is buttery heaven.

Chocolate Molten Cake
Chocolate Molten Cake ($25)
Those who like chocolate will adore the moist, warm chocolate cake with melted ganache in the centre, topped with a cold scoop of vanilla ice cream. Plus lashings of sweet caramel? Wow, it's an ending to die for.

There are a few more choices like creme brulee, bread pudding and apple crumble tart which are equally massive in size (you get to "preview" actual samples on a display tray).

Nice cosy ambiance with funky artwork
The restaurant setting is upmarket without being too intimidating. Cosy ambiance with funky artwork. You can feel just as comfortable here with family or business partners. There is also a private dining room at the back.
